COCOA BEACH, Fla. — Oct. 25, 2026 — The Brevard County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 33-year-old Rockledge man. He was shot early Thursday in the parking lot of Graham's Beach Grill in unincorporated Cocoa Beach, according to a sheriff's office news release.[1]

As of the release, no arrest had been made and no charges had been announced. The sheriff's office said the man who fired the shot was released and is cooperating with investigators.[1]

What the sheriff's office says happened

The account below comes from the Oct. 22 release. The agency describes its findings as preliminary.[1]

  • Deputies were called to the restaurant at about 2:18 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, after a 911 caller reported that a person had been shot.[1]
  • They found an adult man with life-threatening injuries. Brevard County Fire Rescue treated him before he was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.[1]
  • The sheriff's office identified him as Walter Butler, 33, of Rockledge.[1]

According to the release, Butler and another man had "a verbal exchange in reference to a previous disagreement." The sheriff's office says the argument "escalated into a physical altercation when Butler attacked the male."[1] The release says "a single shot was fired during the physical altercation by the male who was attacked."[1]

After the shot, Butler went into the restaurant and collapsed, the release says.[1]

The man who fired the shot

The sheriff's office has not named the man who fired the shot. It says he stayed at the scene and met with deputies when they arrived. He was then "detained and transported to BCSO Criminal Investigative Services to speak with homicide agents."[1]

"Based on the initial investigative findings, the male who was confirmed to be the shooter was released and continues to cooperate with agents," the release says.[1]

The release does not say whether prosecutors will review the case, and it does not mention any legal finding about self-defense. Launchpad Digital is not naming the man because the sheriff's office has not identified him and no charges have been filed.

The investigation continues

The sheriff's office calls the investigation "on-going." It says agents are trying to interview more people who were there at the time of the shooting.[1]

Anyone with information is asked to call Agent Neil Lee of the BCSO Homicide Unit at (321) 633-8413.[1] Media questions go to sheriff's office spokesperson Tod Goodyear at 321-501-7594.[1]

Context: a hard October for the agency

The shooting came less than two weeks after a loss inside the sheriff's office. Its news release list shows a release on Oct. 11 titled "Sheriff's Deputy Killed in Traffic Crash." On Oct. 13 it posted another, "Funeral Arrangements for Agent Kevin Morris."[2] The same list shows a separate Oct. 11 release titled "Deputy Involved Shooting."[2] These are separate cases with no connection to the Cocoa Beach investigation.

What this story does and doesn't say

Everything in this report comes from the sheriff's office's own release. That account is preliminary, and the agency says it is still interviewing witnesses, so it could change. Launchpad Digital will update this story if the sheriff's office or prosecutors release more information or announces a charging decision.
