JACKSONVILLE, FL, Nov. 2, 2026 — Two Jacksonville Sheriff's Office officers shot a man Sunday evening at an apartment complex on Broxton Bay Drive on the city's Northside, the Sheriff's Office says.

Sheriff T.K. Waters and Undersheriff Mark Romano shared details in a video briefing the agency posted late Sunday. According to the Sheriff's Office, District 6 patrol officers went to the complex around 6 p.m. after reports of gunshots. While officers were talking with a woman there, six gunshots went off.

The Sheriff's Office says a man then came out of a dark area and didn't respond when officers asked whether he'd been shooting, or comply when they told him to stop and show his hands. He walked up the stairs to the second story, pulled a gun from his right pocket and began turning toward the officers, and two officers fired, the agency says.

The man was taken into custody and transported by Jacksonville Fire and Rescue with life-threatening injuries. No officers were hurt. The Sheriff's Office says it isn't releasing the man's name because his identity hasn't been confirmed, and it isn't naming the officers, citing Marsy's Law.

The Sheriff's Office says this is its 16th officer-involved shooting this year. The State Attorney's Office is conducting an independent investigation, and once that's done, the Sheriff's Office will conduct its own review of the use of force.

Launchpad Digital will update this story if more details are released.
