FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Oct. 25, 2026) — Broward County residents have a rare chance to help review the rules that shape county government. The county is taking applications for its 2027 Charter Review Commission (CRC) through Friday, Nov. 13, 2026 [1].
What the charter is
Broward County calls its charter the "Constitution for Broward County Government" [1]. Article VI of the charter requires the County Commission to appoint a CRC at its first meeting in January 2027, and every 12 years after that. The CRC reviews the charter in full and can propose amendments or revisions [1].
According to the county, the CRC can study "all phases of county government," including significant, regional, long-term and complex issues the county faces [2]. Its recommendations must go to voters for approval [2].
The last time around
The county says the most recent CRC met from 2015 to 2018. It sent 11 amendments to voters on the Nov. 6, 2018, general election ballot. All 11 passed and became part of the current charter [2].
Who can serve
The CRC has 19 members [3]:
- Each of the county's nine commissioners nominates two residents of their district.
- The County Commission appoints one more member at large.
- All nominations must be confirmed by a majority vote of the County Commission.
To apply, you must be a registered voter in Broward County and live in the county [1][3]. Florida legislators, county commissioners, county constitutional officers, the county administrator and Broward County employees can't serve [1][3].
What members do
According to the county, CRC members will [3]:
- review the charter and county government
- study how county government is structured and run
- take part in meetings and public hearings and consider public input
- develop any proposed charter amendments or revisions
The CRC must hold at least two public hearings. It will set its own meeting schedule once it's formed [3].
How to apply
The application is online at broward.org/charter/CRC [1]. The county says applicants will see a confirmation page after they submit [1]. The county's Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and County Administrator's Office will review the applications. Commissioners then consider applicants for their district nominations and the at-large seat [3].
The county expects to make the appointments at the commission's first meeting in January 2027 [1][3]. The county's announcement says members will serve through the day after the 2028 general election [1].
Questions go to the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs at 954-357-7347 or intergovernmental@broward.org [1].
