TAMPA, FL, Nov. 5, 2026 —

Latest: The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is conducting a homicide investigation after a lunchtime shooting Wednesday at the Sabal Center / Citibank Center campus at 3800 Citibank Center in Tampa, just west of Brandon. A woman was killed on the scene. An armed Citibank security guard shot the gunman inside a cafeteria; the gunman was later pronounced dead at Tampa General Hospital. Four other people were treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. The Sheriff's Office has not released the names of the woman or the gunman.

What the Sheriff's Office says happened

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office news release posted Wednesday evening and Chief Deputy Frank Losat's on-scene briefing, covered by the Associated Press, FOX 13 and WUSF:

  • At 12:11 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, the HCSO 911 Dispatch Center began receiving calls reporting shots fired at the campus.
  • The first marked HCSO unit arrived within one minute, and deputies entered the building.
  • The gunman drove a four-door sedan over medians and grass, crashed through a secure fence line into an outdoor seating area where people were eating lunch, then got out with a rifle and fatally shot a woman.
  • Inside the building's cafeteria, a Citibank armed security guard confronted the gunman. The two exchanged gunfire, and the guard shot him.
  • At 12:24 p.m., the gunman was taken to Tampa General Hospital. He was pronounced deceased at 1:12 p.m. One victim was pronounced deceased on scene.
  • More than 3,200 people were on campus when the shooting occurred.
  • A total of 367 HCSO deputies responded, including SWAT, Aviation, Drone and K9 units, along with deputies and detectives from across the agency. Together with local, state and federal partners, more than 400 law enforcement personnel were on scene. Buildings were cleared within about two to 2½ hours.

Sheriff Chad Chronister said in the release: "This was a tragic situation where a victim was killed by an individual who was intent on killing as many people as possible. Thanks to the brave actions by the security team on-site and more than 365 deputies, this unhinged suspect was stopped before he could harm anyone else."

Losat told reporters: "Was there a potential for further violence? Absolutely. So kudos to that security guard."

What Citi has said

Citi Chair and CEO Jane Fraser sent a memo to employees that Citi shared with FOX 13. Fraser wrote that one Citi colleague lost their life, that the Tampa campus is secure, that the company is adding security at other sites as necessary, and that counseling is available. She thanked the security team. Citigroup also told outlets it was cooperating with authorities.

What has not been released

As of Thursday morning, Nov. 5, the Sheriff's Office had not released the names of the woman or the gunman, whether they knew each other, what led to the attack, or how the four other people were injured. Chronister initially called the incident targeted; Losat later said investigators were still working through the details. Launchpad will add names and motive only when primary sources confirm them.

Witness accounts reported by other outlets

David Dzien, a Citibank vice president, told The Associated Press he saw the sedan crash through a fence about 150 yards away, then heard gunfire and fled by a fire escape. Matt Chauvin, general manager of the nearby Sheraton Tampa Brandon Hotel, told AP the hotel locked down and sheltered about 300 Citibank workers.
