JACKSONVILLE, FL, Oct. 28, 2026 —
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office on Wednesday released video and preliminary details from an Oct. 11 shooting on Mar Vic Lane in which officers shot and killed a woman, according to the agency's post on X.
The agency identified her as 34-year-old Chau Duncan. "Had Duncan survived her injuries, she would have been arrested for four counts of Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer," JSO said.
What JSO says happened
All of the following is JSO's preliminary account.
On Oct. 10, the agency's emergency communications center got a call "reporting a woman dressed in a purple jumpsuit was waving a firearm in the air." Officers didn't find her. About an hour later, a caller said "a woman wearing all purple pointed a gun at a man in the same area," and officers again couldn't find her.
The next day, another caller said "a woman wearing a purple sweatsuit pointed a gun at a man." JSO says officers E. Cobian and J. Curtis found Duncan, who was "yelling and throwing things," and repeatedly told her to stop, show her hands and stop reaching into her bag. "Duncan did not comply with those orders," the agency said.
According to JSO, officers approached using a patrol car, with Cobian driving slowly toward her and officers Curtis and J. Boykin walking behind it. JSO says Duncan "pulled her firearm from her bag," pointed it at the officers and "fired a round, striking the driver's side door of the patrol vehicle." Officers Curtis, Boykin and B. Herrin "simultaneously fired, striking Duncan," the agency said.
Paramedics gave emergency medical aid after she was handcuffed, and she was pronounced dead at the scene, according to JSO.
What happens next
"The State Attorney's Office will independently review the incident to assess the legality of the officers' actions. JSO will then conduct an internal review to ensure the officers acted within policy. Conclusions remain pending," the agency said.
The full video is on JSO's post. It runs nearly 14 minutes.
