OKEECHOBEE, FL, Nov. 1, 2026 — The National Weather Service in Melbourne issued a flash flood warning for southeastern Okeechobee County at 11:10 a.m. Sunday, and by 11:46 a.m. it said "Flash flooding is already occurring" (NWS warning update).
"Law enforcement reports portions of State Road 70 and US 441 in and around the City of Okeechobee are impassable," the updated warning says. "Motorists should avoid these roads. Water was also entering structures."
Local law enforcement reported that between 3 and 5 inches of rain had fallen, with 1 to 2 more inches possible, according to the Weather Service, which calls it "Life threatening flash flooding." The warning, in effect until 1:15 p.m., lists Treasure Island, Okeechobee, Taylor Creek, Four Seasons Estates, Okeechobee Airport, Whispering Pines and Basswood Estates.
The Weather Service's warning graphic, posted by NWS Melbourne on X, estimates 25,717 people, 15 schools and one hospital inside the warned area.
"Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles," the warning says. Warnings can be extended or canceled; check weather.gov/mlb for the latest.
If you're in the Okeechobee area, stay put until the water goes down.
