Update, 12:25 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026: NWS Peachtree City said at 11:10 a.m. that flooding continues in north-central Fannin County, including McCaysville, with floodwaters expected to slowly recede and no additional rainfall expected. The Flood Warning runs until 2:15 p.m. EST Thursday.

MCCAYSVILLE, GA, Nov. 5, 2026 — Overnight thunderstorms turned the Toccoa River and nearby creeks into a flash-flood emergency in McCaysville, a north Georgia border town, and rescue crews from three states were still pulling people out Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City extended a Flash Flood Warning for north-central Fannin County at 6:39 a.m. EST Thursday and labeled it a Flash Flood Emergency for McCaysville — wording NWS reserves for a particularly dangerous situation. The bulletin said radar and gauges showed 3 to 5 inches of rain had already fallen, flooding was ongoing, and no additional heavy rain was expected, but impacts would continue. "SEEK HIGHER GROUND NOW," the warning said.

NWS rated the flash-flood damage threat as catastrophic and told people not to drive unless they were fleeing a flooded area or under an evacuation order.

Rescues and a city lockdown

FOX 5 Atlanta reported that rescue crews from Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina had pulled at least 30 people from flooded homes in McCaysville by early Thursday, with more residents still trapped. Many evacuees were taken to a local recreation center, FOX 5 said. The station reported floodwaters above rooftops in some areas, washed-out roads near Cherry Log and Sugar Creek, and school closures Thursday in Fannin and Gilmer counties. McCaysville's police chief told FOX 5 he wasn't aware of confirmed injuries, though a woman was seen being placed in an ambulance; her condition wasn't known.

WSB-TV reported that the City of McCaysville declared a state of emergency at about 5:20 a.m. Thursday and closed public access at River Road, Mobile Road, Blue Ridge Drive and Highway 68 entering from Tennessee. Police Chief Michael Earley said the city was closed to unauthorized personnel for the safety of residents and responders, WSB reported. An earlier flash-flood emergency had been in effect until 1:30 a.m., and warnings covered parts of Fannin, Gilmer, Murray and Union counties overnight, according to WSB.

How this ties to Florida's flood week

Florida is still digging out from its own fall flooding under Executive Orders 26-227 and 26-228, with the St. Johns River under flood warnings farther south. Thursday's Georgia emergency is a separate system over the southern Appalachians, not a continuation of Brevard's weekend rains. NWS and local officials in both states are giving the same core safety message: turn around, don't drown, and don't walk into floodwater.

For Floridians with family in north Georgia or traveling toward the Smokies, WSB and FOX 5 both said roads into McCaysville are blocked and that washed-out bridges and mudslides are complicating rescues. Check Georgia DOT and county alerts before traveling.

What's next

NWS said the McCaysville flash-flood warning runs at least until 9 a.m. EST Thursday, with statements updating as gauges and spotters report. Local officials hadn't released a damage total or a confirmed casualty count when FOX 5 and WSB filed their early-morning updates. Launchpad will update when NWS or the city posts a later assessment.
