A starter checklist
Check your hall's page for bed size (many use extra-long twins) and what's provided. A typical list:
- Sleep: sheets that fit your mattress, pillow, blanket or comforter.
- Bath: towels, shower caddy, shower shoes, toiletries.
- Study: laptop and charger, headphones, notebooks, a desk lamp that meets your school's rules.
- Power: a UL-listed surge protector with a circuit breaker (UF allows these; see below).
- Documents: photo ID, insurance card, a copy of immunization records, bank card.
- Health: prescriptions, a basic first-aid kit.
- Florida-specific: rain gear and an umbrella, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle.
- Storage: under-bed bins, hangers, a laundry bag and detergent.
Things schools ban
Rules differ by school, so read your own housing handbook. Examples from current Florida university rules:
- University of Florida prohibits candles (including wickless and candle warmers), incense, lighters, plug-in air fresheners and diffusers, floor-style halogen lamps, lava lamps, deep fryers, personal space heaters, nails and over-the-door hooks, duct tape and adhesive wall coverings, weapons and toy weapons, e-scooters and other wheeled devices with lithium batteries, 3D printers, and animals without approval. Mini fridges can't exceed 12 cubic feet or 3.5 amps, and microwaves can't exceed 1,500 watts. Students who need an otherwise banned device for a disability can request it through the Disability Resource Center (UF Housing conduct; UF Pack Like a Pro).
- University of North Florida bans candles, wax warmers (except bulb-heated ones), incense, halogen and lava lamps, space heaters, electric blankets, fireworks and flammable liquids. It notes that tampering with fire safety equipment is a third-degree felony under Florida law (UNF 2026–27 Resident Handbook).
- Florida State University publishes its own list of allowed and prohibited items and decorations (FSU Housing: Personalizing your room).
Tip: coordinate with your roommate before move-in so you don't both bring a fridge or microwave.
