Everglades day trip: Shark Valley and the Tamiami Trail

Shark Valley, on the Tamiami Trail west of Miami, is the easiest way into the Everglades' sawgrass "river of grass."

As of October 2026, check hours, fees and closures before you go.

Itinerary

Day trip

  1. Morning

Leave early and take Florida's Turnpike south, then head west on the Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41) to the Shark Valley entrance of Everglades National Park.

  2. Midday

Explore the loop road on foot, by rented bike or on a tram tour run by a park concessioner. The observation tower at the loop's midpoint looks out over the sawgrass. Check the NPS site for current tram and bike availability.

  3. Afternoon

Drive east on the same road, which becomes SW 8th Street in Miami, for a late lunch at Versailles. Optional detour to Homestead for Robert Is Here before the drive home.

  4. Evening

Drive home, about 3½ hours. It is a long day; an overnight in the Miami or Homestead area makes it easier.

Parks & fees

  • Everglades National Park (National Park Service)
$35 per private vehicle (valid 7 days), $30 per motorcycle, $20 per person on foot or bike. Non-U.S. residents age 16+ pay an additional $100 per person. Cashless. The park is open 24 hours, but visitor center hours vary. Passes sold at the Homestead and Shark Valley entrance stations.

Fees and hours as listed on each official page when we checked in October 2026.

Practical tips

  • The drier winter months are generally the most comfortable time to visit. Summer brings heat, heavy rain and mosquitoes.
  • Bring water, sun protection and insect repellent; shade on the loop road is limited.
  • Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30.
