As of October 2026, check hours, fees and closures before you go.

Itinerary

Day trip

  1. Morning

Drive north to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and take the Black Point Wildlife Drive auto tour. Early morning is cooler, and the refuge is open sunrise to sunset.

  2. Midday

Continue to Canaveral National Seashore. Playalinda Beach, at the south end, is undeveloped barrier-island beach; NASA's Vehicle Assembly Building is visible inland. Bring water and shade.

  3. Afternoon

Optional: the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is nearby. It is ticketed separately; check its official site for prices and hours.

  4. Evening

Head to Port Canaveral for a waterfront dinner (see below), then about an hour home.

Parks & fees

  • Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service)
Daily pass $10 per vehicle, required for Black Point Wildlife Drive. Roads, trails and boat ramps open sunrise to sunset. Areas may be restricted by NASA during launch operations.
  • Canaveral National Seashore (National Park Service)
$25 per private vehicle (valid 7 days), $20 per motorcycle, $15 per person on foot or bike. Cashless (credit/debit). Passes are sold at the Apollo Beach and Playalinda entrance stations, not at headquarters in Titusville.
  • Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex (Official site)
Ticketed attraction; we have not listed prices. Check the official site.

Fees and hours as listed on each official page when we checked in October 2026.

Practical tips

  • Summer is hot and humid with frequent afternoon storms; start early and carry water.
  • Launch days bring traffic and possible closures in the refuge and seashore. Check the refuge and NPS pages the day before.
  • Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30.

Getaways guides are informational. We don't accept payment for listings, there are no sponsored or affiliate links, and we don't rate or review places. Restaurants are well-known, long-running local spots, each linked to its official site. Drive times are rough estimates from Palm Bay without traffic.
