Why go

The Gulf waters north of Tampa Bay are one of the few places in the world with natural sponges suitable for commercial use, according to the state historical marker at the docks. Tarpon Springs' sponge industry dates from about 1890, and John Cocoris, a recent immigrant from Greece, introduced sponge diving here in 1905. Within a few years, many Greeks had come to work in the industry.

Itinerary

Day trip

  1. Morning

Walk the docks along Dodecanese Boulevard and find the state historical marker across from the Sponge Exchange. The marker says the exchange was incorporated in 1908 to store and sell sponges and still serves as a focal point for the Greek community.

  2. Midday

Have lunch on the docks (see Local spots below).

  3. Afternoon

Walk to Spring Bayou, where St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral holds its Epiphany cross dive each year.

Annual event: Epiphany

  • Epiphany at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral (cathedral)
Cathedral at 36 N. Pinellas Ave. The cathedral says the day starts with Orthros and Liturgy, followed by a procession to Spring Bayou, where the waters are blessed, a white dove is released and young men ages 16 to 18 dive for a cross. Its diver rules say divers must attend the Divine Liturgy of Epiphany on Jan. 6. Check the cathedral's site for the 2027 schedule.

Checked on the cathedral's official site November 1, 2026.

Estimated expenses

Walking the docks has no admission listed. Fuel: AAA's Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metro average for regular gas was $3.81 a gallon on November 1, 2026 (AAA). At 25 mpg, a 50-mile round trip uses about 2 gallons, or roughly $8. Use the trip estimator on the Getaways page for your own starting point.
