Fiction · Comedy sketch. This is a made-up, clean comedy sketch. The people and events are not real, and any resemblance to real people is coincidental.

Part of our guide: Liftoff: A guide for families and young adults · How-To Guides: Daily Life & DIY.

Act One. A college freshman stands before a washing machine like it is a final boss.

Eli: How hard can it be. Clothes go in. Soap goes in. Button goes boop.

Eli: [puts in one red hoodie, nine white shirts and a full cup of detergent "for extra clean"]

Act Two. Bubbles. So many bubbles.

Neighbor: Is the laundry room supposed to be... foamy?

Eli: It is called being thorough.

Act Three. Every shirt is now the color of a strawberry milkshake.

Eli: [on video call] Mom. Hypothetically. Is pink a bold fashion statement?

Mom: Sort your colors, use the measuring line on the cap, and send me a picture. I need it for the family album.

The takeaway

Separate darks, lights and reds; read the care label; use the amount of detergent the bottle says. Calling your mom is always allowed.
