PALM BAY, FL, Nov. 2, 2026 — Brevard Public Schools won't reopen Tuesday. "Out of an abundance of caution and due to extensive flooding across the county, BPS Schools and District offices will be closed Tuesday, November 3rd," the district says on its website. Schools were already closed Monday.

How much rain. At 3:36 p.m., the National Weather Service in Melbourne issued a flood warning for southeastern Brevard and northeastern Indian River counties until 9:30 p.m. "Between 16 and 22 inches of rain have fallen," it says, with 1 to 2 more inches possible. Palm Bay, Melbourne, West Melbourne, Malabar, Grant-Valkaria, Micco, Barefoot Bay and Sebastian are among the places it lists. Earlier, at 2 p.m., the Weather Service said the flash flood emergency for southern Brevard had been "transitioned down one category to a Considerable Flash Flood warning (Level 2 of 3)," adding that "flooding impacts continue."

A separate flood warning for central Brevard runs until 8 p.m. It says 6 to 10 inches have fallen in places including Melbourne, Rockledge, Satellite Beach, Indialantic, Merritt Island, Suntree and Viera.

Overnight. A flood watch for Brevard and the Treasure Coast runs until 10 a.m. Tuesday. "Any additional rainfall overnight may exacerbate ongoing flooding," the Weather Service says.

The St. Johns River. The river near Cocoa reached its 16-foot flood stage at 1:15 p.m. Monday and is forecast to rise to 16.8 feet early Thursday afternoon, which the Weather Service rates as moderate flooding, according to its river flood warning. At 16.7 feet, the warning says, water covers yards and "may enter low lying homes along the St Johns River in the Lake Poinsett area."

Shelter. The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Parker Memorial Missionary Baptist, 4101 Melvin Chatman Way, Cocoa, Brevard Emergency Management said at 6:03 p.m. "We recommend bringing all essentials you will need during your time in the shelter," it said. Its 6 p.m. update warned that "as evening sets in, it is even more important to stay off the roadways," because darkness can hide hazards in the water.

State help. Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for Brevard and six other counties on Monday.

Voting Tuesday. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and voters must use their own precinct's polling place, the Brevard County Supervisor of Elections says. Its Find Your Precinct tool and each voter's Voter Information Card show where to go. The elections office in Viera stayed open Monday for mail ballot drop-offs.

If you head out Tuesday, give yourself extra time and turn around at any water you can't see the bottom of.
